21st Century transportation move
The
Orange Unified Board of Education will be voting at their January 19, 2017 Regular
School Board Meeting on a resolution to apply for a grant through the South
Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) to purchase five new electric
school buses and electrical service infrastructure.
Item
14 H (Agenda page 66-67) is part of the Consent Agenda Item that is voted on as
one block unless an item is pulled for recognition or extra discussion.
Since
2001 the SCAQMD's Lower-Emission School Bus Program has awarded over $280 million in funding to
replace 1600 diesel school buses and retrofit 3400 other diesel school buses with
particle matter emission control systems.
Funding
sources for the 2017 awards come from programs associated with the California Climate
Investment Programs: the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP); and the Hybrid
and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP).
The
2017 grant program is an effort by the state to help in commercializing Zero
Emission School Buses so the grant will not require the winning districts to use the
new electric buses as replacements for older buses. In addition, "minimal to zero matching funds" are required for the grant.
Grant winners be awarded on May 5, 2017. The
SCAQMD reserves the right to award partial grants.
