Perhaps one of the most effective Orange Unified School District employees during the past 40 years, John will be missed. No matter how important he became and regardless of his responsibilities, he always considered the student a critical part of OUSD's organization. A gentle, compassionate person, he made OUSD a better place.

As a student at McPherson Junior High in the mid-60s, John Ikerd was my Algebra teacher. To his students he said, "I will always be your teacher. You can come back for help any time." Some kids went back for help with math -- I never needed it. As a young adult, though, I was able to take him up on his offer -- but not for help with math. John provided guidance and mentoring I needed as a young teacher and helped build in me the confidence I needed to make teaching my life. I'm sure there are countless others with a story that is not unlike my own. He will be missed by many.

John was my Principle at LaVeta Elementary and my duaghters teacher at Yorba Jr. High...He was also a best friend to both of us throughout our lifetime. I will truley miss this great and gentle man.

IN THE SUMMER OF 1992 I WAS TAKING ALGEBRA AT ORANGE HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUS, AGAIN, AND MR. IKERD WAS MY TEACHER. A FRIEND OF MINE IN THE CLASS SAID TO ME "THATS THE SUPERINTENDENT OF ORANGE UNIFIED".
I DONT KNOW IF THIS IS COMMON PRACTICE FOR A SUPERINTENDENT BUT I NEVER FORGOT HIS NAME.
HE WAS VERY PATIENT BUT HAD A NO-NONSENSE APPROACH FOR THAT SUMMER ALGEBRA CLASS. NO SASS WAS OFFERED TO HIM BY US STUDENTS AND HE NEVER RAISED HIS VOICE.
