    Former OUSD Superintendent dies

Dr. Robert French served twice as OUSD Superintedent

Former Orange Unified Superintendent, Dr. Robert French passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2013.
French served twice as Orange Unified’s Superintendent. First coming to Orange Unified in the early 1990’s, French’s first term as Orange Unified’s Superintendent saw OUSD’s School Board taken over by members of the reactionary Education Alliance * headed in Orange Unified by Marty Jacobson.  After a series of public relations blunders by the Jacobson Reactionary Board, then Superintendent Dr. French authorized a 1995 community survey to present to the OUSD Board now headed by Jacobson.  While teachers and schools had a good showing in the survey, the Board did not, and French was forced out into retirement.

After another round of PR disasters that included a proposal of running the district by a Board Committee without a superintendent, the Board selected Barbra Van Otterloo  as French’s replacement.  Several court cases, lawsuits, a recall election and a final election come-back try, the recalled and disgraced Jacobson Board was gone.  The new Citizen’s Board that replaced the recalled trustees turned to French to again lead the district after Van Otterloo herself retired.

The popular French’s second stint as Superintendent also had its share of controversy as a sex-scandal erupted at OUSD’s Santiago Charter School and a move was made to revoke the schools charter.

Upon French’s second retirement from OUSD, his hand picked replacement Dr. Thomas Godley too over as Superintendent.

In the last three years, three former OUSD Superintendents have passed; John Ikerd;  Dr. Thomas Godley; and Dr. Robert French.  Only two former Orange Unified Superintendents survive: Barbra Van Otterloo and Dr. Renae Dreier.

The services for Dr. French will be held at 9 am on  Monday, July 1, 2013 at the Rose Hill Memorial Park’s Sky Rose Chapel ( 3888 Workman Mill Road, Whitter CA).
